Today was another beautiful day at Kasen Studio. I started my day with a long walk. I walked to the edge of Seto City and visited the Ceramic Founders Monument. I had no idea it was there and! I had no idea there were monkeys there too! The park that the monument and monkeys are at was a serene area. It was up high and so one could look out onto the city.
After my walk Sensei instructed me on how to use his materials and I began to paint some of my pieces with wither iron or cobalt. I used traditional Oribe ware designs and Sensei was so impressed, he went and got another book for me to look at that had more designs in it. I'm really excited to see how these pieces turn out.

After the pieces were painted, Sensei talked to me about his glazes. He had a board with a bunch of test pieces on it and it showed three materials and the combinations of the three. He showed me where they keep their materials and how they have glaze buckets for dipping and glaze buckets for brushing. He demonstrated how they brush on some pieces and then let ms have at it. The Oribe green glaze is very temperamental and needs to be just the right thickness because it runs a lot but if it isn't thick enough it turns out more yellow than green. Again, I can't wait to see how they turn out!!
Yesterday Sensei picked up another Explore Japanese Pottery guest. He is from Singapore and is a high school art teacher. It is amazing the variety of people that come through and I am so glad to be a part of it and get to meet all these amazing people, and most importantly, work with the great Sensei!
Not only was last night another welcome party, it was also a farewell party for Beatriz. She has finished up her stay here and will be continuing her journey in other parts of Japan before heading back to the UK. She is such a beautiful person inside and out and I wish her the best in her future endeavors. She has some amazing ideas of how to help people through ceramics and I can't wait to see it happen.
For the party I helped Sensei start dinner and it was quite entertaining and a lot of fun. Did I mention very delicious?! We had Japanese soul food that included octopus and shrimp. I would live to try and make it back home, I'll have to ask Sensei for the recipe. After dinner we continued the party down the street at the local Japanese pub. I hope everyone back home is enjoying their days too! Best wishes!
